Beginner to Intermediate Level 22” x 12”   39 pieces.
Full body black bear cub sitting in a tree.  This black bear cub was created many years ago, you can tell by the pattern number, I-147 was created in 1999. Now we have over 450 Intarsia patterns. Each pattern takes a little longer to develop because I make each one to see if I need to alter grain direction or the lines on the pattern. I like to take a photo of the finished piece to send with the pattern. The Bear Cub pattern has some large pieces and a few intricate pieces around the face.
Woods Used: Various shades of Western Red Cedar (WRC comes in that many colors). Today I would use some Peruvian walnut for the fur, (it is hard to find the dark WRC) soft Maple or WRC for the light face parts. I would look for some unusual wood for the tree maybe a live edge piece of wood.
Suggested Blades: Gold #5 for Western Red Cedar or any softwood. Platinum Plus #5,  Platinum #5,  TLB #5, Pegas MG-#5 for the hardwoods.  PLP #2/0, or TLB #2/0 to cut the interior lines (after the exterior lines are cut).

Texturing the Bear; A Wonder Wheel used for adding texture to the fur.
I shaped the bear first, then marked with pencil the direction I want to follow with the wheel. Sometimes you have to keep rotating the wood to get to the right spot. I made deeper grooves by pressing the wood harder against the wheel. There will be a slight burn depending on the hardness of the wood. When the finish is applied it will tone down the appearance of the dark lines.
